Scoop the Ice Cream Truck

Boys and girls, mothers and fathers, meet your new best friend! Scoop the Ice Cream Truck can’t compete with modern ice cream trucks. He tries to change to make himself more popular just to fit in, only to discover, through friendship, that he is sweet just the way he is!

This paperback edition includes supplemental information about the American confectioner, Harry Burt and the African American engineer Frederick McKinley Jones. Burt created Good Humor Ice Cream Bars, then purchased a fleet of trucks with mobile refrigeration units developed by Jones, to sell his ice cream. The ice cream truck was born!

Scoop the Ice Cream Truck also includes Scoop’s Song by Elena Skye. Scoop’s story is told through music that can be played with the book’s QR Code or with the sheet music included on the final page.

“Keeler does not patronize the intelligence of young readers; instead she trusts them to stretch their minds a bit. The illustrations by Patricia Keeler are charming and her artwork has a uniquely individual style that assists in bringing home the book’s message. It works. Highly recommended.”
-San Francisco Book Review

“Keeler’s paintings have a gloppy abandon that suits their sticky subject. A market-driven economy lesson, with friendship squeezed in, too.”
-Kirkus Reviews

“Scoop’s resilience and ability to reimagine himself as something completely different, along with his sweet friendship with the little girl in red, which was the inspiration for his final victorious transformation, was what inspired me to write and perform “Scoop’s Song.” I love the way he makes himself part of her family and lives out his dream!”

Lizzie and Lou Seal

Lizzie loves her flip-flops. They go shuffle-shuffle across the rug, smack-smack on the floor tiles, and thwap-thwap down the stairs. Lizzie drags Lou Seal, her blow-up toy, to the beach. But beach fun turns to beach disaster when Lizzie loses her flip-flops and Lou Seal is losing air. It’s a sink-or-swim scenario. What will Lizzie do?

“Mixed-media pictures are at their most exciting when painterly waves crash against the shore, and onomatopoeic words in display type (“step thwack” when Lizzie has only one flip-flop, and “scooch scooch scooch” as Lou Seal travels through the sand) add to the fun in reading aloud.”
-Kirkus Reviews

“An adorable story about a little girl and her inflatable dolphin. It’s kind of bittersweet. As in life, things happen that don’t go as planned, but the girl makes the most of it. It’s a lovely picture book with whimsical illustrations and plenty of onomatopoeia. ”
-Amanda’s Books

“This is a beautiful book with mixed media art and a lovely retro feel. Children will relate to Lizzie’s independence and creative problem solving and fall in love with Lou Seal themselves. Filled with lots of fun words and sounds, this is a perfect read aloud book for parents and children alike.”
